I have a couple of mail merge documents, I would like to remove the default data source, so basically the document will not have a data source (I will give it one through a VBA script that I wrote)

Tools/Mail merge. In the first step of the mail merge helper choose "Return
to normal Word document (instead of form letter, or labels, etc.)

If I remember correctly, the way I solved that problem was to save the
document as a template (.dot file extension). That gets rid of the data
source.
