Filtering Trouble - Word Letter with Excel Data

This seems so straightforward but I'm having real
trouble "filtering source data" and would really
appreciate some help.

I want to select records without data in a particular
field ("date letter sent").  Using the Mailmerge Wizard, I
have tried to filter the recipient list using the arrows
next to headings, but the filter has no effect.

I've repeatedly tried clearing all the filters then
reapplying the filter but nothing works.

What else can I try or what should I be doing?  Word 97
did things differently nd I've never come across thsi
before where I've killed nearly two days :-)

Thanks

Hi Jannoth,

If you used to use Word97, then may we assume you now have
Word 2002 or 2003? Go to my website, and in the MailMerge FAQ
to the section on Word 2002. There's an entry on how to get
back the old functionality, and another on how to use other
connection methods.

I suggest you pull out the old Mail Merge Helper which will
1) give you the connection method you used to use and 2) the
interface to which you are accustomed.

Note: you can use the Mail Merge Helper for just about
everything. But I highly recommend the new Mail Merge Toolbar
for setting up LABELS.

Thanks Cindy.

Sounds like you understand what I mean! Great.

You understood correctly, that I'm using Word 2002 and
Excel 2002 and look forward to reading the Mailmerge FAQ.

But where / what is your website?  Have been to hispeed.ch
but see nothing but German, French or Italian.  I can only
speak English or Polish :-(

Can you please direct me?

Thanks Cindy.

I'm off to have a proper look now.  But, I wanted to say
something first . . .
I'm sure that I'll find the answer to my problem on your
site, but even if I don't I'm so grateful fo you for
creating such a treasure chest !  It's absolutely great
and will stay in my favourties for ever :-)

I love your site, Cindy, but am still struggling.

Much of the mailmerge content makes sense, cos it relates
to Word97 and how I used to do things.  But the example
screens don't appear for me as I'm using Word 2002 now.

1. On your site, in mailmerge FAQs, I couldn't find how
to "get back the old functionality" of Word 97.
2. I can't find any mention of a "Mail Merge Helper"
anywhere - what is it?  You've really whet my appetite for
it in your post so am desparate!

Even the linked documents on your mailmerge FAQ web page
contain links to documents that seem to discuss
functionality of Word 97 but 2002 is quite different (I
prefer 97).

I've already improved my functionality with stuff on your
site, so thanks again.  But I'd really appreciate some
more help.

To get the Mailmerge helper (which is the old dialog that you used in
Word97,  right click on the toolbar and selection Customize and then go to
the Commands tab of the Customize dialog and select the All Commands
category and scroll down through the list of commands until you come to the
Mailmerge Helper item.  Then left click and drag it onto a toolbar or onto
the expanded Tools menu if you wish.

Thank you guys; the Mailmerge Helper has been found,
loaded and did the job that Word 2002 Wizards just
couldn't.

I used to merge several documents with just one data
source but now read that it can't be done anymore.  I'm
gonna try anyway, using my new Helper friend.

Thanks again.

See if you find http://www.gmayor.com/mail_merge_labels_with_word_xp.htm
helpful. This one has the pictures that will help explain the issues
involved.
