Does this happen even if you create a completely new Excel sheet and use
that as the data source?

Is this Word/Excel 2000?

If Excel Tools|Options|General|"Ignore other applications" is checked,
uncheck it (but it might be worth finding out why it is checked first).

Two things worth checking/trying:
a. does your Excel spreadsheet run any macros when it starts up?
b. it is possible that your Excel spreadsheet is corrupt. It may be worth
creating a completely new sheet and copying the contents of the existing
sheet into it.
