In previous versions of windows I used an Excel document
which contained a column of dates formatted to be shown
as text rather than numeric value.  When merging with my
primary Word Document the format remained the same.

I have updated to Windows XP and when performing the
merge the data has reverted to a numeric value. Is it
possible to retain the format or to format the field in
the Word document?

Press Alt+F9 to toggle on the field codes and add a formatting switch such
as \@ "dd-MMMM-yyyy" inside the closing } of the mergefield.  Vary the
arrangement of the d, M and y to get the format that you require.  MMM would
give Feb,  MMMM gives February
