{ Mergefield Phone \# "(000)'-'000'-'0000" } works for me. Did you update
the field (F9) after adding the switch?

I'm unable to get the phone # to format and I'm also
missing numerous records after the merge... is it possible
that because I have Access 2000 and Word XP that there is
a compatibility issue here?

It's a puzzle - however checkout the Excel data section of
http://www.gmayor.com/mail_merge_labels_with_word_xp.htm (Excel & Access
have basically the same issues) and see if that helps.
