You should be doing the first thing that Graham mentioned. That is,
execute the merge to a new document and save that. The new document will be
populated with the data from Access, but there will be no link to the
database. The data will appear as normal text in the document.

I merge based on a .dot template. So the document is new. Saving this
document has a link to the database (what i do not want)..

If you create a merge document from a template it is simply a document copy
of the template. You still need to merge to a new document to produce a new
document containing record content and not fields.
