Is there a way to send a merged document as an attachment
(I have done this part before), BUT ALSO include text in
the body of the email explaning what the attachment is?

I have done the merged attachment using Word, using the
Subject line to describe the text.  I have also followed
up with a regular email pointing out the merged document
should have been received, and providing a bit more of an
explanation.

There is no way to do this via the mailmerge utility itself.

The article "Mail Merge to E-mail with Attachments" at

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/MailMerge/MergeWithAttachments.htm

would give you some clues about how to go about doing it using VBA.

Thank you!  I'll play around with it and see what I can
come up with.

Hi Kristin,

I don't know about Outlook, but I can do this in Eudora by creating
"stationary"  (note: stationary in Eudora is not the same as in Outlook) and
then setting that stationary up as my default stationary. To do this go to
"Tools, Options, Composing Mail, and select your Default Stationary). I'm
thinking that this might be possible in Outlook too, but I have never tried it.

This is only useful if the message that you want to send out explaining what
the attachments contain is the same for everyone  (I have gone and changed the
odd email here and there when I've got an extra message for someone, but my
merges are usually quite small <50 per merge). ALSO...you have to remember to
go in and change you default stationary back to nothing when your done, or it
will keep popping up whenever you create a new email.

HTH
