A number of people have reported similar problems and removing \*mergeformat
seems to get rid of at least some of them. When you consider what
\*mergeformat is trying to do (merge the data in using the /existing
formatting/) then it isn't a huge surprise that it does not work very well
for inclusions. Personally, I would rather it was not included by default
when fields are inserted.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is an issue and the
closest article number to describe this problem is 212007
