Hidden Formfield - date format - not valid

I have a billing template (online form) I prepared for another lawyer where
during printout if the table for payments shows no payments, that entire
table is marked as hidden using a print interception. The problem comes up
if the bill is printed and then someone attempts to insert a payment before
the bill goes out.

The text formfield for the date of the payment is marked as hidden. When a
date is entered and you try to tab out of the field, a message pops up
saying that the date is invalid. If I unprotect the form and mark the field
as unhidden, then reprotect the form, the date can be entered and tabbed out
of with no problems. I've checked this in Word 97 and 2003 with the same
behavior.

I can fix my problem by changing the formatting back to unhidden in my print
macro but I find this field behavior inexplicable. Is this a known behavior?
A bug? The error message is certainly problematic.

TIA

If you can despam my address and send me the doc.+anything else needed to
make it work, I'll have a look a.s.a.p. But my guess is that if you can't
make it work, I probably won't be able to either.
