Is it possible to insert a merge field or bookmark into a
Word 2000 document header? I've tried a bookmark via
Access and a merge field via Excel. Word acts as if the
header information is write protected. I don't see a way
of opening the header before either inserting data into the
bookmark (via Access) or merge field (via Excel).

It is not possible - nor is it possible to put bookmarks in the merged
document.
You should be able to use a Styleref field in the merge document header to
reproduce the content of a particular paragraph style - which may contain
the field from the document that you want to put in the header.

You can insert a mergefield into the header; no bookmarks though.

I am far from being an expert but have succeeded in creating a merge
document (Word 2000), opening view header and then inserting an Access 2000
field. It is simple and straight forward.
