We recieve the following message when we are editing a new merge
document "Word could not merge the main document with the data source
because the data records were empty or no data records matched your
query". At any given time our datasource can be purged of it's
contents and we do this on purpose. Is there a way to disable this
error message from the registry or somewhere? it is more of an
annoyance than anything else, but we get calls from people in another
department asking about the error.

I don't think so. I'm not convinced you could avoid this even by writing a
whole bunch of macros. If you have a lot of control over what how your data
is updated, the simplest approach I can think of would actually be to ensure
that a single dummy record was always present in any tables used as data
sources in your merges, but
a. of course you'd have to ensure that it was removed as soon as any real
data was added
b. it's "tail wags dog" time.
