Suppose I select text inside a Word 2000 Text Box, and
define it as a bookmark named "MyCaption". (The selected
text is actually a caption for what's inside the text
box.) Next, in another part of the document, I type: "See
{REF MyCaption \* MERGEFORMAT}, Page { PAGEREF MyCaption
\* MERGEFORMAT }" where the stuff between {} isn't typed,
it's actually inserted by using Insert | Field from the
menu.  When I turn off field codes with Alt-F9, the REF
field appears correctly, but the PAGEREF field always
displays "1" even though the bookmark occurs on page 5.
Anyone know what's up with this?

Word can't see or properly handle text in a text box. Can you use a frame
instead?

If I remember correctly, you cannot use PAGEREF to refer to a bookmark
inside a text box, as you have found out!

Normally I use frames to do this knid of stuff. Select the text box that
contains the bookmark, get to the text box propertry dialog (Format > Text
box...), select the Text box tab, and convert the text box to a frame.
You may have to reformat it a bit... And if you have never worked with
frames, well, they are slightly different from Text boxes. One good thing
about frames is that they can be part of the style definition. If you are
going to use that type of text very often, select the whole text delimited
by the frame and create a style based on that selection. Later, all you have
to do is apply the style to some text to transform it into a frame...

Good luck!
