I have a word form that has some formulae in.  The form
will need to be protected.  I wanted to record a macro
that would do an update fields on my formulae fields, but
this is not possible if the form is protected.  Can
anyone suggest how I can get around the problem?

Many thanks for any help

Assuming that you are using formfields, set the calculation on exit property
of the formfield.
