Having problems connecting to an datasource that I have
succesfully used in Access and Excel.

When I just the database source, I do get a list of all the
table in my database, but when I select the table i want
(Same table I'm able to connect to using Access/Excel) I
am unable to successfully connect to be able to read the
data.

When I get a list of datasource names and right click on
the name I want, I can then click on "Analze in Excel" and
then I do get a list of all data in the table. If I click
on "View in Browser" I get a error saying have a error in
the query etc.

Since I can connect to the same datasource and table in
Access/Excel, shouldn't this work in WORD 2002 also??

Hi Jeff,

It's unclear exactly what you're trying to do.

1. Are you trying to connect to a table in Access? Or a table
in Excel? Or a query in Access?

2. What menu commands are you using to make this connection?

3. Are you getting any messages? What are they - *exactly*?

Hi Cindy,
 Thanks for you reply.

I have set up an ODBC driver to connect to an Informix database. I can
successfully connect and query a table in the Informix database from
within Access and Excel. I'm having the problem when trying to connect
to the same database/table from WORD: Here are the steps I am taking:

In WORD:

1. Click on  Insert Database Button
2. Click on "Get Data"
3. Click on "Connect New Data Source
4. Click on "OLE DB FIles" then click on OK
5. Click on "ODBC DSN"
6. A list of datasources will then be displayed and I click on "sis2"
which is the same source I use in Access and Excel
7. I then get a list of tables in my Informix database
8. When I click on the same table name I use in Access & Excel I get
the following error message:
Word Unable to open data source

Couple of observations:
1. In WORD, if I click on the "Open DataSource" Button I get a list of
datasource names.
2. If I then right click on the datasource name I want, I get the
options to
Analyze in Excel  and Open in a Browser.

If I choose to Analyze in Excel,  Excel opens and the records from the
Informix table is displayed

If I choose to Open in a Browser, MSIE opens but I get the error:
Command contained one or more errors. Query could not be processed

Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong??
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeffro,

I don't know much about the "innards" of OLE DB and how it works with
the general ODBC driver, but...

I suggest you try working directly with the ODBC driver, instead, using
MS Query. In the "Open Data Source" dialog box, go to the top right-hand
corner, where there's an icon with a "list arrow". Click the arrow, and
select MS Query, then go through the steps to use your ODBC DSN.

Note: don't try any fancy selecting or criteria, to start with.

Also, if you're in a hurry, and need to get a job done "right now",
bring the data into Excel or Access, then merge to that.

Thank You Cindy.  Using M.S. Query seems to be working like I need it
to as can access the records I need.
