I have been fighting the same problem. The best resolution that I have found is to set the Option "Confirm Conversion at Open" to checked and selecting to use Access with DDE. Word XP defaults to OLE. It is a little slower but does not get fried the way it does with OLE.

Apart from the approach Joe Brazell has mentioned, you may find that the
query works in Word if you use % instead of *, but not in Access. Having
both versions, one for use in Access and one for use from Word, could be a
solution.
You should also be able to change your database so that it recognises %
instead of * by using Access|Tools|Options|Tables/Queries|"SQL Server
Compatible Syntax
(ANSI 92)"|"This database". However, if you are going to make that change,
proceed with caution because it could affect an awful lot of things and
involve a lot of work.

I agree with Joe. That's how I solved my problem merging
a word source (template) doc with my access database
after we converted to XP It also corrected another
problem - everytime I merged to a specified Access ID,
the query always linked to the first record, not the one
specified! .
