I’ve got a dilemma to solve immediately—I am mail merging from an excel spreadsheet and need to use an if/then statemen such as --  If the value of a certain field is X, insert the value in field Y.  Right now the only way I know how to use if/then statements is, if the value of a certain field is X, insert specific text (as opposed to a field in the spreadsheet.)  Any ideas?  Thank you!

It's probably easier to work directly with the field codes - use Alt-F9 to
toggle between field code/field result views and ctrl-F9 to insert the
special field code braces {}. Then use something like

{ IF "{ MERGEFIELD certain_field }" = "X" "{ MERGEFIELD Y }" "" }

Yes, I agree with Peter, you can't do it using the
automated "if..then ...else" in Word because it doesn't
allow you to insert another field code.. You have to
manually type it using the toggle feature. There is of
course room for error, so when I use the "Ctrl F9" I will
copy and paste the field code that I want inserted
between the brackets.
