I am merging names & addresses to print a canned letter and everything merges correctly. When I print the letters, however, the merged data prints correctly except they are shaded/highlighted like they are on screen when you set them up. How can I suppress the shading from printing?

It always helps if you mention which version of Word you're having problems with
:-) That helps us visualize the interface, and recognize known "gotchas" so that
we can give you more accurate answers.

Are you actually *executing* the merge to the printer or a new file? Generally,
field shading doesn't print (and there's no option for it), but...

Could this be a FORM, with form fields? Those will print shading; you turn the
shading on/off by clicking the "a" button in the Forms toolbar.
