program even remembered where the database was and found it when I opened the
document. Life was great! Then suddenly it didn't find the file, so I did a "Find
data source" and found it. But when I inserted the database file, I got a "select
table" window. I'd never seen that before. There are no files to select showing,
but there is a dropdown called "Work Book" that has all my databases; but when I
select one of them, the OK button grays out. I am on a network if that makes any
difference.

Which version of Word is involved, here? And has that changed recently?

Have you asked your network administrator if they've changed anything? Restricted
permissions in the locations where the Word or Excel files are stored, for
example?
