Hi!

Whichever file I open, or create in Word 2003, and use
cross-reference links, I cannot change the Manual/Automatic
Updates checkbox (they're disabled) in the Edit > Links box.

Why does this happen?

I suspect you posted a similar question yesterday in the Tables newsgroup.

Many fields do not automatically update. You can write code to automatically
update them. Some will update automatically upon printing or shifting into
print preview.

That is, for many (most) fields, there is no "automatic update" switch. This
is one of the advantages of using online forms which do provide for updating
of dependent fields.

wasn't me ;)

ok, I understand what you wrote.

another thing about a specific document (which caused me to
write the current question) is that on opening a word file,
appears a box asking:

This document contains links that may refer to other files.
Do you want to update this document with the data from the
linked files?

but there are no external links, just internal cross
references.

how can I correct this? (that is why I wanted to know about
the other thing)

hi, thanks for the reply and sorry again for the double post.

I forgot to mention that that KB article does not apply, as
I am using office 2003, and the solutions offered do not
solve the issue

thanks again

the article also applies to 2003, but you need to change
anything version-specific for the Registry key. IOW, where it
say 10.0 use 11.0 instead.
