Adding an attachment to an email mail merge

Is it possible to attach a Word file to an email that is
to be mailed through the mail merge function? I have found
out how to insert the file into the body of the email, but
I don't want to do that, I want to send the file as an
attachment to the email itself.

Is a macro the only way to perform this operation? Why
hasn't Microsoft created a patch for this?

At present, the use of a macro is the only way.
