Hi Eric,
1. Which version of Word are we dealing, with, here
2. Press Alt+F9 to see the field codes maintaing the links. I
take it the Excel table uses a LINK field code? Could you
please copy/paste into your reply what you find between the {
brackets }?
3. What kinds of fields are you using in the header?

Hi there,
1. This is Word 2000.
2. LINK Excel.Sheet.8 "C:\\R&C template\\RAINPUT
Illustration.xls" "For_Word!Policy_Values" \r \*
MERGEFORMAT
3. The fields in my header are also link fields to Excel.
I also tried Ref fields in there, but got the same error.
Thanks for your help.
Eric

Hi Eric,
I can't reproduce the problem.
If you
- Rename Normal.dot to NormalOLD.dot
- Start up word
- Type some text into the new document you see
- Copy/Paste special to link in the Excel table
- Bookmark some text
- Insert a REF field into the header
do you still get the problem?
