Use CTRL+P to bring up the Print panel. You can either print a selection of pages you have highlighted or you can select the Pages option and plug in the pages to be printed. (EX: 5-12 will print pages 5 to 12)

Trouble is it prints the whole document - not the
selected pages. I should have included this comment in
my original quesiton. There seems to be something
different about a merged document as opposed to a normal
document of many pages.

With a document created by mailmerge, the "pages" are actually Sections in
the document so it is necessary to prefix the number with an s
s5-s12 with print pages 5 to 12

I don't know what you did wrong, but that is the way to do it.
For a particular page of a particular section, specify p#s#
e.g. p2s3 will print the second page of the third section.

i think you misunderstand the question being asked here.
i am having the same problem printing from a mail merge
and even tried to export it to another document and print
that and it still won't let me print a selected range. i
have already tried updating my office suite but that
didn't help at all. if anyone has any ideas why word will
not print a selected range please let my know. also a
problem specific to this file might be the fact that it is
over 1500 pages long but i have tried it a mail merge with
a much smaller file (around 15 pages) and it still will
not print a range. thanks in advance

To print a particular page in a particular section, if each section contains
multiple pages, then you need to specify the page number p# and the section
number s#
For example p2s3 will print the second page of the 3rd section in the
document.
The size of the file has nothing to do with it.
