How can I adjust the amount of characters in a "MergeField"?

Is there any way to adjust or, in particular, expand the
amount of characters that are imported into a mergefield?

The text that I am merging into my document template is 30
characters, but when the MailMerge is completed, it only
displays 25 of the 30 characters in the actual field.

Thanks,
Steve

Word should accept 255 characters, easily. More, even, under
the right circumstances.

1. Version of Word?

2. Application containing the data?

3. Give us a couple of examples of the text being truncated,
please?
