I am doing a merge with pictures.  I have used the
icludepicture mergecode and then inserted the mergefield
where the file name goes (pictures location is in a
database) and this works ... until I save the file.

Then the mergefield is converted to an abbreviation of
the last file merged and won't merge any more.

Anybody know if this bug has been fixed?

thanks
.

Which version of Word are we dealing with?

Some versions are more lenient in this respect than others.
You might try
   - execute the merge with the field codes still
displayed
   - lock the field so that it can't update by selecting,
then pressing Ctrl+F11
   - next time you open the document, select the field
again and press Ctrl+Shift+F11 to unlock
