Merge $ from Excel to Word XP

when i merge an Excel 2000 file that have $ to Word 2000
it works fine, but now I am trying the samething on a PC
with Excel and Word XP all but the $ come over it to Word
XP. How ca I get the $ to cone though with the merge?
