Postal codes disappear

Hi,
I am using Windows NT and Office Professional 2003.  I have an Excel
database of customer names, addresses, and order information that I want to
merge with a customer delivery letter.  This worked fine when I had Excel
97. Since I've upgraded there have been problems.  It worked fine for a few
times but now the 5 digit postal codes either show up as 5 digits plus one
decimal  or disappear altogether.  And the alphanumeric postal codes are
also missing. They are all formatted in Excel as text. When I first started
using the new version Excel kept flagging the postal codes with error
messages 'numbers stored as text' so I turned off that error in Options but
switching it back on doesn't change the problem with the codes.

I tried changing the option in Word as one of the websites suggested to use
DDE instead of OLE but it simply doesn't work.  It only links using OLE.
Can anyone help with this problem?
Thank you,
Leslie Padorr,
