In some of my templates I have a fill-in field.  When I
open the template the fill-in window appears immediately.
I don't want the window to appear until I merge the
documents with the receipient.  How can I accomplish
this?

Not ideal as it tends to undermine the point of having templates, but you
could try setting up your mail merge main documents as Document (.doc)
rather than template (.dot) files. The behaviour of a number of fields is
different in that case, so even if it works, check the behaviour of FILLIN,
ASK, and DATE/CREATEDATE fields in particular.
