That could be the key. So
a. what exactly happens when you try to open the text file?
b. what happens if you check Word Tools|Options|Confirm conversions at
open, then try to open the text file? Specifically,
- which source type (Teext, Encoded text, ettc. etc.) is selected in the
dialog that (probably) appears?
- is the list of source types the same on the offending machines as the
non-offending ones?

When you have checked Tools|Options|Confirm Conversion at open, when you try
to open a text file, you see a dialog box with a list of file types that
Word can convert from. So I was wondering if the list that you saw on the
"bad" machine was exactly the same as the list on the "good" machines. The
only way to compare the two is either to have the two machines side by side
or write down the contents of each list, but the lists are typically not
very long.
