slow mail merge in XP

I have a mail merge document that used to take a few
seconds to merge using Windows98 and Word97. When I was
upgraded to XP and Word2002 and a much faster machine,
the merge takes 2 minutes. I tried it on another (slower)
98 machine which took a few seconds and another XP
machine which again took 2 minutes. Any Ideas?

Hi,
we ran into the same problem...Peter & Cindy (tried to)
help us (and we thank them a lot for it)....The problem
seems to come from the fact that MS changed the "mail-
merge engine" seriously in XP and there are few things you
can do about it.
I would suggest that you start from the mvp site
(http://word.mvps.org/index.html) or the site from Cindy
Meister
(http://homepage.swissonline.ch/cindymeister/index.html)

The only solution that worked for us, was decreasing the
number of merge fields (in lieu of the "full" 3000 fields,
our software only exports the merge-fields (both in the
headersource and datasource) necessary for the document.
