I am having the same issue.

This is my merge field:

«APPLICANT_HIRE_DATE»

It prints as 8\1\2004

Need it to be August 1, 2004

Where do you put the \@ "MMMM d,yyyy" ???

Toggle on the display of Field Code by pressing Alt+F9 and insert the
formatting switch inside the closing } of the mergefield code.
