I have inserted the following field code formula in a
word document and I keep getting syntax errors and
invalid path errors.

excel files = c:\book1.xls

formula: Link.Excel.Sheet.8 "c:\book1.xls" "Sheet1:A1"

Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

a. there's a full sto/period after "Link" that should be a space

b. I think you need to use row-column notation (R1C1 v. A1) in this case

c. you probably need to double-up the backslashes in the path name

so try

Link Excel.Sheet.8 "c:\\book1.xls" "Sheet1:R1C1"
