To add the $ symbol you need a field switch -
{=({Mergefield fieldname} * .15)\# ",$0.00"}
Totalling could be problematical. We need more information about your merge.

Maybe it would be easier, I see it as this..
There are two types of 'lines' of data:
One has the mergefield
The others contain this syntax
I'm guessing it's difficult to total the syntax lines, so
what about just taking the original figure/mergefield and
running another formula on it?
Total all mergefields (unique) across records and display..
In the right direction? Are you already there?
