The limit usually comes from the data source. For Excel and Access it's
255. For a Word table used as the datasource, I think it's 64.

Do you mean for actual number of merge fields in a
document or actual number of characters to merge into a
merge field? Doug is right if you are looking for just
characters from a "text" merge field from Access.
If you are looking for maximum possible number of
characters per merge field, in Access you can get up to
655 characters if you use a Memo field for your merge
field.
I send out merge letters with paragraphs of information
saved in Access.

Actually I am looking for the maximum number of merge
fields from a data source record. I know that Excel (and
perhaps Acess) limit to 255, but I am using a text file
with about 900 tab delimited fields (please don't ask why -
it's a Marketing department issue).

I think it's limited only by the resources the machine has to
handle the processing...
