How do we get Mail Merge to recognize a leading 0 (zero) in the Z.

Our ZIP codes here in the Northeast start with a 0 (zero). I have the column
formatted as a ZIP code in Excel 2003, but it keeps coming over to Word 2003
as a 4 digit number, cutting off the leading zero. Help!
