We have a complicated letter that is created by doing a
mail merge.  The main document is in Word 2002 and the
data is in Excel 2002 (after having been exported from a
SQL-based database via Crystal Reports 8.5).  The merge
includes several If-Then statements and pulls in text from
several other Word docs.

The merge works fine on my PC but not on the PC of the
person whose job it is to produce these letters.  She is
on Win XP SP2 while I am on an older PC with Win 2000
SP4.  However, the merge works on another machine here
that is just like hers (it has Win XP SP2 but it's one
year newer than hers).

I cannot figure out what is different about her machine
that prevents this merge from working.  She gets "A field
calculation error occurred in Record #" and then
gets "Error, not a valid filename."  But I don't see how
it can be a problem with the data or the Word doc, because
it works OK on my machine.  Is it a SQL thing?  I am lost.

She is able to do simpler merges without getting this
error.

Help?!

Try changing the connection method to the datasource by selecting Options
from the Tools menu and then on the General tab, check the box next to
"Confirm conversions at Open".

We just checked that box, saved and closed the main
document, opened it again and tried the merge.  It still
produces the same error on her machine.  Thanks for the
suggestion, though.

Hi Peggy,

If these PCs are on a network, it may be a problem with network permissions
for the user with the problem. It could also be that the file that's being
referenced for the record that produces the error exists on the troublefree
PCs but not on the troublesome one and that the field is coded to look for
the file on the local drive instead of the network drive.

Cheers
