Simple field operation

This seems like a simple thing, but I can not figure out
how to get it to work.

I have lots of fields on a protected form. I want to enter
data in certain fields and have others automatically
filled based on that data. In this case, I have a long
legal document that I want to enter a name in the first
field and have various fields throughout the document
update with that name without having to retype it 20 times.

Surely this can be done, but how?

Also, even if I do a number calculation based on other
fields (which it seems more likely to be able to do), it
doesn't actually perform the calculation until I open the
properties of the field and then close it.

Help, please.

Brett,

See:

for the first issue

For you calculations, with the form unprotected double
click the variable fields and check "Calculate on exit."
