I need to add a space to a merge field - I want to say
print merge field middle initial and then print a space.
These need to be inside of the brackets so if there is not
a middle initial the form still prints correctly

You need to use an If...then...Else construction that checks if the middle
initial field is populated and if it is, inserts that field followed by a
space and if it is not, it inserts nothing.
