How do I get Word 2003 to recognize a leading zero in a zipcode

Word 2003 drops the leading zero from a five digit postal zipcode during
mailmerge.  The mailmerge data base is an Excel file, where zipcode data is
formatted as a ' number -- zipcode' and correctly displays the leading zero.  
(Computer is operating XP SP2)
