What are the data sources for these merges, and are they in the same
absolute locations (i.e. folders with exactly the same names) as they were
before? If not, you will almost certainly need to reconnect to the data
sources, even if they were in the same folders as the mail merge main
documents to which they were attached.
Also, were you using an earlier version of Office than 2002 on the old
machine? There were major changes in how Word connects to data sources in
Word 2002. Again, you may find that you need to reconnect tot he data
sources.
In particular, if you were using Outlook as a data source you are quite
likely to encounter the error you mentioned. If you are, I would have a look
at initiating the merge setup from Outlook (select some Contacts and see
Outlook Tools|Mail Merge).

Im using the same office version just a different operationg system. I'we
checked the placement of the files and they are in the same place as on the
old computer. No name changes.
The lists were created in word mail merge (3 Lists).
I have no idea how to reconnect to the lists on the new computer. The link
in edit is not highlighted.

In this situation I would try to follow the suggestions in the following
article:
