Sometimes when inserting a file into a Word 2000 doc I get an email screen
with the file added as an attachment to the email instead of inserting into
the doc as expected. How is this email screen controlled and turned on and
off?

There should be an "email" button on your standard toolbar. This should toggle
the "email envelope" on/off.
