mail merging in word 2003

Hi.
when i try to merge to printer button ic on on menu bar,
they are always greyed out. when settin up from custom
the icons will be activated but as soon as i closes out
of the customized tab they all become inactive. can you
help

I'm having some difficulty visualizing your setup; you're
not using standard terminology...

1. By "menu bar" should I assume you mean the mail merge
toolbar, the standard toolbar (the one you always see in
Word by default) or something else?

2. What do you mean by "settin up from custom"? Please be
more specific and detailed, and use the text you see on the
toolbars and buttons (or their tooltips).

3. You have inserted merge fields in the main merge
document? And the document is linked to a datasource? If
either of these states is not true, then mail merge cannot
execute.
