I have an hp deskjet 960c with a duplexer installed but I can not figure out
how to tell MS word to print on both sides of the paper without doing it
manually.

I can't say I am familiar with that printer.  However, in my HP printer I can
duplex manually by going to File, Print, and going into Properties,
Finishing.  There you can set it to print on both sides of the paper.  This
might work for you.
