re-establish DDE connection

I have a data source in Excel and the merge template in word, just recently I
have been getting the message that a DDE connection could not be
re-established to open the excel document while in the word document. We
have been using both the data source and word template for a number of months
beofre this problem arose. Any ideas?

Versions of word and Windows? What have you changed on the system (new versions,
updates, new software) since the last time it worked?
