Enter a prompt, have it enter my answer in the document

IN WORD 2000, I could enter a "Fill IN". The effect was that when the
document was opened, WORD provided a fill-in-the-blank box, with a prompt
such as "Amount Paid" and a default answer such as $100.
When I OK'd it, word finished opening the document and put the amount
specified into the indicated spot in my document.
How do I do this in Word 2003?

From your description, I think you need an ASK field in conjunction with a
REF field to place the data.
