13 numbers added to Word/Excel mail merge field

In MS Office Professional 2003, a Excel data colum which should return, for
example, 3.444 in the Word merge field insteads returns 3.4440000000000002,
adding 13 numbers to the field. Checks of the original Excel column shows
proper formatting for both the column and when checked individually. The
Excel text input bar at the top also displays the correct number with none of
the added numerals. I have re-done the Word document, but still get the
unwanted numbers. Any thoughts appreciated
