On the whole, Word either opens the spreadsheet by using DDE to open Excel,
which opens the spreadsheet, in which case you should probably edit the data
directly in Excel, or by opening Excel using OLEDB, in which case the Edit
button in the Edit recipients dialog box is generally greyed out and you
can't edit directly.

How to set it to use DDE to open Excel?

Check Word Tools|Options|General|"Confirm conversion at open" then go
through the connection process again and select the DDE option when it is
offered.
Sorry for the late reply.
