I might be stupid - but I can't insert a merefield with CTRL + F9 (don't
wanna use the menu). This is what i'm doing

in a doc i press CTRL + F9 and 2 brackets apear
in the brackets i write DATE ( and end up with { DATE } )

when i press alt+F9 to se the date nothing is displayed. ctrl+f9 again and
{ DATE } apears.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Before you press Alt-F9, select the field and press F9 to execute it.

Or select print preview, assuming that the default 'update fields' option is
selected in Options - print.

Or right click on filed and select 'update field'
