Insertion of STYLEREF field gives a spurious newparagraph mark

I am using STYLEREF to create dictionary ears in a mailmerge directory.
However, the maindoc is very susceptible to corruption whilst formatting,
resulting in each STYLEREF field having a pargraph marker appended.  This
ruins the layout.  However, I am unable to delete the unwanted paragraph
marker (it simply reappears) without deleting the STYLEREF field as well.
Once this problem occurs in a document all subsequent insertions of the field
have the same unwanted newparagraph marker attached.  The only solution is to
start again.

How can I avoid/cure this?

I don't have a solution, but I experience something similar with DATABASE
fields on one machine. It may not even be the same problem or the same cause
as yours, but it is probably worth following the steps in

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

which might give you a clue as to what is causing the problem. In my case,
the problem disappears if I delete the Settings value in the Data key in the
Windows registry, but I still do not know what causes that key to be
corrupted.

NB, if you follow the instructions about deleting the Data key or one of its
values, I would use the File|Export option in the Registry to export all the
values first - quite a lot of settings are stored in there so you want to be
able to get them back if there /isn't/ something wrong with the key.
