Why does email merge remove the links from my document?

I have an HTML document that I want to send out to my mailing list.

I load it into word using the email merge function.  It all looks great in
word and the links all work.

I send out the mailing, but when the people get it none of the links work,
they have all been removed.

What am I doing wrong?

What version of Word?  I understand that for this to work, you need XP with
one or both of the service packs installed.

Hope this helps.
