I need to do a merge of contact information in newsletter style (2 columns)
with the names alphabetical from top to bottom, then in the second column
alphabetical top to bottom that will be about 20 pages total.
I tried a 2 column table but the merge goes left to right and not top to
bottom.

You'll need to put it in a (non-table) column layout. Format-->Columns, then
you can insert your table cells, if desired.
